Your wedding date doesn't just determine which flowers are in season. In the Western Cape, it shapes the quality of light in your photographs, the comfort of your guests, and how much you'll pay for the same venue. Here's what each season genuinely looks like.

Summer (December – February): Golden but Windy

Long evenings, warm temperatures, and sunsets as late as 8:00 PM make summer visually spectacular. The Cape's infamous South-Easterly wind, the 'Cape Doctor', is, however, at its most persistent during these months.

If you're considering a coastal venue on the Atlantic Seaboard, ensure there is a solid indoor alternative. Inland Winelands estates are generally more sheltered, but wind can still be a factor in exposed valley locations. Whatever the venue, ask what shelter it can offer an outdoor ceremony if the wind picks up.

Autumn (March – May): The Photographer's Season

March and April are widely considered the best months in the Cape for photography. The South-Easterly dies down, temperatures are mild, and vineyards shift from green to amber and gold. If you have any flexibility in your dates, this is the window most local wedding photographers prefer.

Winter (June – August): Underrated and Underpriced

Winter rainfall increases, but the mountains look their most dramatic, often snow-capped from June onwards, and frequently shrouded in mist. Winter weddings in the Cape have a genuinely different aesthetic: moody, intimate, and warm inside.

Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is a strong choice for a winter wedding. As a 5-star hotel with multiple indoor event spaces and a setting at the foot of the Jonkershoek Mountains, it offers the drama of a winter Cape backdrop with the comfort of a fully enclosed venue.

Spring (September – November): Blooming but Booked

Spring in the Western Cape is spectacular: wildflowers, fresh green vineyard growth, and clear mountain air. It is also when the competition for popular dates intensifies sharply. If spring is your target, start the venue search at least 12–18 months out.
